Cannot connect to QQ network

Yesterday and today, I cannot connect to the QQ network with Adium. I am using v1.3.4. Before that, the connection to the QQ network was fine. Now Adium just keeps on prompting me for the password to my QQ account.

To verify the situation further, I just downloaded the real QQ client for my Mac, and I can connect with absolutely no problems.

It is just not too great with two IM clients... Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this?

I have the same issue. Until a few days ago, QQ worked fine now it keeps prompting my for my password. I can log into the real qq application and mail.qq.com with the same login info, just not Adium.

I've been unable to connect to QQ since Friday, June 19, 2009. It might have been a problem before that date, as others have noted, but that's the day that I noticed the problem.

Not wanting to post just another "me too" reply here, I tried to find other supporting evidence. I used Console.app to look for information from Adium or anything about QQ. Nothing appeared in the logs. I've been able to use the QQ web interface and QQ for Mac v1.0 Beta 1(442), so I know my username and password are correct and that I can reach the QQ servers from my location.

I've been using Adium 1.3.4 since about May 19, 2009.

So ironic... I just discovered Adium now, thinking that I've found the best thing to cumulate MSN, AIM, QQ, Facebook... And QQ just doesn't work!

With QQ 1.0, everything is fine, but I tried with Instantbird, and it seems that I can't connect either with this program. So, I guess that the problem doesn't come from Adium at first... Did QQ change something? Could it be?

@QRW: Don't despair. When Adium is able to connect to QQ, it works well enough. The support is rather basic, though. So far, QQ emoticons aren't supported and receiving inline images doesn't seem to work. What I often end up doing is logging in to QQ at the start of my day. If a QQ friend chats with me and it seems like we're going to have a long conversation, I will log out of QQ with Adium, then connect to WebQQ.

Adium is actively developed, though, so feel free to request additional QQ support in the fora.

Oh yes, I know that Adium is actively developed. Actually, I knew it before today but I really disliked it... I tried it one more time two or three days ago and I really saw a difference!

Concerning QQ, I have no doubt that the problem will be solved sooner or later (The sooner, the better of course, but I am patient). And about smilies, I don't consider it as a big deal...

Anyway, am I the only one who thinks that QQ 1.0 is just awful on Mac?

No your not alone. I also think QQ for Mac is horrible. Most of my IM traffic is through QQ so I would be happy to use it if it offered even a few features. But China is the land of following the dominant paradigm, so good luck trying to get anyone at Tencent to listen.

I tried all of suggestions on Adium's help forums to try to get my connection back. I even created a new QQ account and tried connecting through that account, but got the same log-in/password prompt. I also hope Adium can resolve this issue with QQ.

I searched the Adium Trac site for open tickets about this QQ connect problem. I didn't find any, so I opened a new one:

Those interested in a resolution to this problem should monitor that ticket. It would be most helpful if users with QQ connect problems could register with Trac and add information to that ticket. The more information we have about the problem, the more likely it is the developers will be able to fix it.

I should add that even if you cannot provide any additional information about the QQ connect problem, you should go to the Trac site, register with Trac, view the ticket I opened, and give it a vote. Near the top of the page you will see an up-arrow icon. Click on that to increase the vote. That will give the ticket a higher priority.

Update: The Adium Trac ticket has been closed. The problem is not in Adium. QQ has updated their protocol, so the Pidgin library libpurple (which Adium uses) needs to be updated. More information and a possible workaround (untested by me) for the problem can be found in the Pidgin Trac web site, here:

As before, users are encouraged to register with Pidgin's Trac and vote this ticket up to give it a higher priority.

Even after Pidgin's libpurple is updated, an Adium update using this new version of the library will need to be released before most Adium users will see an improvement.

You're right. A while ago, I milestoned http://trac.adium.im/ticket/12748 for 1.4 but I can't promise that the developers will do something about it.
