perian performance - lags in movies

Postby waluigi » Sat Jul 12, 2008 4:39 pm

Hi.
I use perian for a month as my main player and It does a job well.
There is only one problem. With HD 720p movies, on x264 codec.
QT 7 Pro with Perian (all is up to date) works really sluggish with this movies, and sometimes it drop frames, and I can see It, especially when the scenery is really full, or when there is much fast action.
I've watched Cassandra's dream today (mkv file, converted to mov with added subtitles by submerge) and in garden scenery I saw picture like my computer is not fast enough. But I have the newest iMac 24" 2.8GHz with 2GB of ram, and CPU is used at max. 50%, so It can't be problem with CPU. I also noticed, on other movies, that rewinding the videos in QT is much more sluggish than in mplayer or VLC (in fact, in mplayer everything works a lot faster). But I like idea of converting all movies to mov, and adding subtitles, and maybe even putting it in iTunes, all with QT and perian.
Is it something wrong with my iMac, or maybe It is perian problem, and will It be corrected in newer version of perian?

Big thanks for any help, and take care.

Tell Apple, it's their bug that QT doesn't handle skipping frames properly.

So this is problem with QT or x264 codec in Perian?
Because I don't think so that computer is too weak, in mplayer movies works faster (while forwarding or something, you know, it's more responsive) but mplayer can't display mov with subtitles added in submerge so...
I like perian, and is there any way of getting rid of this problem of future?
Take care.

So other people have the same? It is not perian fault?
Take care and thanks for replies.

I have exactly the same problem. I've converted some mkv files into mov (720p, H.264, AC3), but now they play very choppy in some scenes. I've got a 2.4GHz Core 2 Quad that is definitely not maxxed out while playing these videos.

I don't understand why this is QuickTIme's fault. Is QuickTime dropping frames unnecessarily?

Aaron

P.S.

Does anyone know how I can get VLC to play mov files with ac3 audio? This would at least let me watch these files until the low FPS problem is fixed.

Ok. I just registered for this one message.

The issue of lagging is because Perian 1.1
Try uninstalling perian and you will see quicktime h264 stuff works just fine!
Also, you can downgrade to Perian 1.0 and it still plays smooth!

So the problem is something to do with Perian 1.1 imho.

johto you are a god!

I've asked this question in numerous forums and I never expected the solution to be so simple. This is great, it means I didn't ruin all of my video collection.

Does anyone have an account on the trak website so we can report the bug? If I don't see a ticket posted, I'll register and do it myself soon.
