Decode Dolby 2ch audio embedded in .mpg file

Postby dognpony » Sat May 15, 2010 10:54 pm

My new Sony camcorder (DCR-SR47) uses Dolby 2ch audio encoding (I think this is a mode of AC3). When I upload the files (.mpg) and I try to play them on the Mac (in QuickTime/iMovie), I get no audio. I am running OS X 10.5 (Leopard).

Note that I am not trying to get the digital stream to play for external decoding... I am trying to get the Mac itself to decode the audio into regular PCM that can be played on the standard Mac sound output hardware.

Note that the files play fine on Windows (XP SP2).

Sony was completely useless in helping me; they said "contact Apple." Apple was also not helpful (they told me to get the latest update to the OS and see if it fixed it--it didn't.) I downloaded Perian, hoping it would include a Dolby 2ch decoder but, if it does, it didn't kick in automatically.

Any advice?
