no ac3 sound in specific avi file (sample included!)

Postby hippy dave » Wed Dec 14, 2011 12:12 am

hi guys
love perian, been using it mostly successfully for years. these days my main use is through front row (snow leopard, first revision macbook). very occasionally i stumble on a video file where the sound doesn't work, i generally just play it through vlc instead, but this time i thought i'd come looking for answers :)

here's a 23meg sample of the file in question, as it already exists online - i hope that's acceptable, tell me if not and i'll slice a sample from the main file myself.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YLAVJFH4

as mentioned it's ac3 audio (most files with ac3 sound i encounter work fine), details according to vlc are:
channels: 3F2R/LFE
sample rate: 48000 Hz
bitrate: 448 kb/s

sound works in vlc, but not in perian via frontrow/quicktime/the spacebar preview thingy in finder.

thanks for any help!

Seriously, seriously broken packetization. This AVI file packages about 5 seconds of audio together and claims it is a single packet of audio. Thats around 100 times too large.

A quick run through avidemux with stream copy yielded a correctly packetized file that Perian played flawlessly. I'd call this just a really broken file.
