Downloaded files grow by 180 kB

Postby nitro2k01 » Sat Oct 17, 2009 8:54 am

I've backed up a bunch of files from a server over sftp, and when the transfer was done, the downloaded folder was about 500 MB big, instead of the expected 70 MB. It turns out that every file seemed to have a ~180 kB. When opened, the files behave normally and can be read and saved without problem, but the size overhead still remains. Since the sftp transfer was slow (which is only to be expected for sftp) I ended up transfering the same files using tar+nc wizardry later on. (That transfer finished 10 seconds before the sftp transfer :D ) And these files are normal in size.
I have a theory why this happens, it might be the "downloaded from the internet" attribute that is taking up so much space. Although it seems almost a bit far fetched, that's my best guess. Is it possible to tell CD not to set that attribute for files? Other ideas why the files have grown?

The issue is that the icon was set for every downloaded file which takes space in the resource fork of the file. As of build r5480 the icon is removed and the default icon for the file is displayed in the Finder.

But as nitro2k01 said, there might be also information stored that indicateds the download for web. I have downloaded a html file which is normally 4kb, when downloaded with CB it was 184.3 kb and after deleting the icon it is still 8,1 kb.

If viewed in Path Finder it shows still 286 bytes resource forks left ((3.5 KB (3.528 Bytes) Daten: 3.242 Bytes Rsrc: 286 Bytes Physikalisch: 8.1 KB (8.192 Bytes)) and the only difference i can discover is that if opened it brings the warning that the file was downloaded from the internet...

The same file downloaded with Filezilla is 4kb (3 KB (3.074 Bytes) Daten: 3.074 Bytes Physikalisch: 4 KB (4.096 Bytes)) and brings no warning.

Is this also fixed with the build r5480 or some build later ?

I have tested the latest Build 5546 and the problem is still present.

A file downloaded with CD is bigger than the original.

I have attached a RTF and HTML file original and downloaded with CD. Also attached the fileinfos as PNGs.

Hopefully this helps to solve the problem.
