Adium causing system wide connection disconnect/reconnects.

Postby Millsy » Mon Dec 24, 2007 1:17 am

First off, I am using Adium 1.1.4

No plugins or other 3rd party additions to the program.
I have 2 accounts, one ICQ, one MSN.

A Mac Pro, dual 2Ghz core Duo CPU's, with 3GB of ram and a 7300GT.
Adium is installed on the system drive.
This problem was prevalent in both OSX 10.4, as well as 10.5

After much confusion as to what was causing my system to lose it's connection to the internet/network every 4-6 hours (sometimes more, sometimes less, but never a full 24 hours of connectivity). The disconnect is just long enough for programs to realize they are not receiving data, and they attempt to reconnect, which they are always able to do successfully until the next disconnect.

I have determined that Adium is the cause of the problem. The problem has been going on since before the latest version of Adium, I just have not had enough time to go through all the options before now.

Without Adium running, I have now been able to go a full 4 days without a single disconnect in any of my X-ChatAqua connections, Skype, or any other semi-permanent connected program.

I have not changed any preferences in Adium in more than 6 months. It is run at startup, and has only been touched to update as the updates are released (no betas).

Are there any theories? And before I attempt to do a complete wipe of Adium to start fresh, how can I do this and maintain my chat logs?

Thanks.

On an iMac with Leopard and wireless internet via airport. Keep dropping the internet connection fairly regularly. If anyone does figure this out, let me know, I have had to shut of Adium for now which is really a shame.

I should probably clear one more thing up.

This is not a wireless connection. I am connected via a D-link DIR-655 gigabit router, to an ADSL connection. No other computer on the network has any issues, and I still have not had issues since stopping Adium.

I've been having this issue with a Netgear FVG318 VPN router and Adium 1.4bx. Netgear forums describe the resolution:

Gaming, P2P and other software applications may have too much load on the router and cause it to reboot. Suggestion is to make sure that the P2P apps are adjusted to only allow a certain amount of connections.

While I believe this is really a firmware problem with the router, is there a work around for Adium to limit the number/frequency of initial connections? It seems that if Adium can't connect to a service, it tends to hammer that service. I thought I saw some discussion of this but can't find it at the moment. Help appreciated. Thanks.

Same problem here. I can't say for sure if it's Adium's fault, but it could be an option. This problem is haunting me since a week or so - probably since I updated Adium to the newest version.

I have a Netgear router and Adium 1.4bx and was running into the same problem. I also think it's an issue with router and it not being able to handle all the connections Adium is opening at once because I was able to stop the router connection drops from happening by disabling some of my accounts in Adium.

Normally I would have 7 accounts each from a different service that would connect when Adium launched:
1. AOL Instant Messenger
2. Google Talk
3. MyspaceIM
4. Yahoo Instant Messenger
5. MSN Messenger
6. Facebook Chat
7. Twitter

After disabling my MSN Messenger, Yahoo Instant Messenger and MyspaceIM accounts, the router drops being caused by Adium haven't reared their ugly head again. I don't know if the services whose accounts I disabled made any difference or not, or if it was just the act of lower the number of connections Adium was making in general that stopped the router drops.
