DIV3 .avi files only run for 5 seconds

Postby Enkera » Sat Dec 19, 2009 9:09 am

Updated to Perian 1.2
DIV3 .avi files only run for 5 seconds, codec shows grey distortion.
Perian 1.1.4 doesn't have this problem and runs the same files fine :[

Moderator Edit: Removed inclusion of ridiculously large image which provided extremely little information.

We need a sample of the file to troubleshoot this.

Yes, I'm experiencing this too. AVI container with XVID files ... but certainly not all ... just some of the larger ones. Here is an example of such a case - regrettably rather long but nonetheless the shortest video that manifests this problem:

[246MB]

Perian 1.2 Snow Leopard (intel of course)

File should be available online within the hour and will expire in a week.

You can use the command linked to here to get a sample of the file:

Ya I'm familiar with DD as a Unix guy - wasn't sure if chopping off much of the body might change how the file is parsed since the smaller similarly encoded files seem to have no problems.

Ok looks like the problem happens on the chopped version as well ... so here it is instead :-P

This is http://trac.perian.org/ticket/460. I haven't examined the file yet.

Seems like we might have to revert more parts of libavformat - I had already reverted one change that made a file 14 days long instead of 30 minutes, but couldn't find all the rest. That or enable its mp3 parsers without breaking .flv somehow.

I had no issue at all with the file in the ticket. Played 24 seconds, so I closed the ticket as worksforme.

This clip only plays for 5 sec, so the one in the ticket is likely some other issue entirely.

Same issue with some Futurama episodes, also the initial image is grainy and screwed up. Attaching screenshots, also of the inspector to show that QT now only thinks the movie is 5 seconds long.

Downloaded and installed 1.1.2 from http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/perian.html. The video now runs fine.

Please, for future releases leave previous versions available for download on the website!

Look at the URL you download, and look at the URL for the latest version. The only difference is the version number. We've always left older versions available on cachefly, just didn't link to them.

Same issues with at least half of my AVI files. Fresh (and clean) Snow Leopard installation, upgrade from previous Perian version. No other codecs have been installed. The only non-Apple software installed on my MacBook is OpenOffice and Perian.

I'm having the same problem with version 1.2 installed with some 'generic' mp4 video with ac3 audio in avi.

Playback in QuickTime (and Finder's Preview) is only 5 seconds and looks like this (audio is alright):
Image

QuickTime Inspector incorrectly reports the following:
Image
Notice that QuickTime incorrectly reports the data size as 2.14 MB and the duration as 5.12 seconds (the aspect ratio size was manually adjusted for posting convenience).

MPEG Streamclip plays the files completely and without a problem and gives the correct file information:
Image

The workaround:
Using MPEG Streamclip version 1.9.3b2 and 'Saving As' an avi corrects the problem, allowing QuickTime to play the videos normally. 'Saving As' avi does not transcode/re-encode the audio or video, but (I think) simply re-wraps the mp4 and ac3 in a new avi container, thus fixing the problem.

I don't know if that helps anyone or if it says anything about where or what the problem is, but QuickTime is able to playback the videos correctly after doing the above workaround. I suspect that this indicates a problem with the avi wrapper and not Perian.

Edit:
Seems to only occur when the audio is ac3, stereo or multi-track.

Ok, but why not link to the old versions? Also, this should be documented somewhere: if I don't know about it it doesn't help me.

I just did the downgrade to 1.1.4. Everything works fine now. I can live with it.

I had the same problem, with many .avi files stopping after 5 seconds and displaying only a green screen in the Finder Preview. However, the files were standard .avi files with XviD video and mp3 audio. Reverting to version 1.1.4 of Perian and re-launching the Finder fixed everything.

I am on Mac OS 10.4.11 using QuickTime 7.6.4
