Vienna 2.1 now released

Postby stevepa » Fri Nov 10, 2006 8:30 pm

It's been a long time but I'm happy to announce that Vienna 2.1 is now released. You can download it from the Open Community web page or use Check for Updates (from the Vienna menu in pre-release versions of 2.1 or the Help menu in 2.0.4.)

There are a number of new features in 2.1 which are described on the Features page, but also a host of bug fixes and minor improvements. In keeping with the philosophy of Vienna, we've worked hard to make these improvements simple and seamless. Another significant change is the addition of three new localisations contributed by volunteers. To the languages supported in 2.0.4 we have now added Brazilian Portuguese, Korean and Simplified Chinese.

A list of the key changes in 2.1 include:

1. Support manually sorting folders by default.
2. Added "Increase text size" and "Decrease Text Size" for browser view.
3. Changed key combination for "Cancel Refreshing" to control-command-s to make command-"-" available for text size.
4. Added "Send Link" functionality for article view.
5. Add address bar and refresh, back and forward buttons at the top of the browser web pages.
6. Add -profile command line option to support custom profiles (needed for Portable Vienna).
7. Added "Refresh Folder Images" command.
8. Added "Blog With" command to blog the selected article.
9. Sort article list by multiple columns, saving the order in which columns were sorted.
10. Added "Summary" field which shows the first part of the description.
11. In condensed reading mode with the pane on the right, the headline fields can now be configured.
12. Added "Filter By" to allow articles to be filtered in the article list by all, unread or date.
13. Persist open tabs when Vienna exits and restore them when it restarts.
14. Handles HTTP 410 to mark a feed as unsubscribed.
15. Add button to Mark All Read the selected feeds.
16. Unread articles marked as bold.
17. Allow dragging of Trash folder.
18. Green icon for articles with updated article text.
19. Don't select first article when switching folders.
20. Renaming folders now done by editing the name in the folder pane.
21. In smart folders, "Text contains" and "Text does not contain" match complete word or phrase only. (This may change in a future version.)
22. Changed modifier key for overriding default browser preference from shift to option.
23. Add Get Info command option and moved Validate command to the info panel.
24. New Layout menu: report, condensed and unified layouts.
25. Provide two new options for new articles notifications: bounce dock icon or no notification at all.
26. Add Keyboard Shortcuts item to Help menu.
27. Change browser's user agent string from Mozilla/Safari to Vienna.
28. Use Sparkle framework for version updates.

Thanks to everybody who assisted with the beta testing and for the valuable and constructive feedback. Personal thanks from me to Jeff for his efforts as co-administrator, full time support engineer and a contributor of a whole host of bug fixes to the 2.1 code base over the last few months.

It feels good to officially release Vienna 2.1, because Steve and I put a ton of work into it, and we're very proud of the results. I'd also like to extend a special thanks to the other developers who contributed code to the project, particularly Michael and David. As Vienna grows in popularity, we hope to see even more contributors!

Actually, I already changed this in a past version, build 2105. :)

I'd just like to say thanks guys!
Vienna has been my feed reader of choice for a long time and 2.1 makes it even more of a joy to use!

The fact that it's open source just makes it all the more impressive!

Kudos to you gents!

Well done Steve and Jeff! Vienna is getting better and better! As somebody who has read practically all of the code, I have to say I really, really appreciate all the work you are doing.

I'm proud to have added a few tiny features to such a great application. It sucks that I don't have more time to work on Vienna right now, but I hope I can sneak a few useful lines into the next version! Keep it up! And, most importantly, have fun!

New Version DOES NOT show my RSS

Postby jazzman34653 » Tue Nov 14, 2006 3:06 pm

I like most folks have used this New Reader and always commented about the fact that it was a great FREE application. The AVERAGE Mac user installs it and then applies the necessary actions to install various RSS sites within it. When we update we expect to get the collection of RSS sites back in the new version. Someone indicated that they are there but are invisible and that an Applescript entry will bring them into view. I for one have never used Applescript and plead total ignorance as to what action to take to view my collection of RSS inb the new version or the last one that had the same ANNOYING problem. Someone back there at the developer's web sitehas decided to ignore this vexatious development and continue to plague us with new versions that have the same problem. This is OK if you have no RSS collection and want to start off rom scratch but most of us have LARGE collections.I really don't want to reimport all my stuff from NetNewsWire because if theRSS I ALLREADY have is invisible but present in Vienna then this might indeed cause a conflict. In any case SOMEONE is absolutely OBLIVIOUS to this problem. I can't believe that no one has bothered to read the reviews and comments of myself and others (see the comments in my previous comment from the last version from other users)

Jazzman, do not derail threads with your own topics. You already have your own thread on that topic.

If you continue your poor forum etiquitte you'll be removed.

I really don't know what you mean

Postby jazzman34653 » Tue Nov 14, 2006 4:22 pm

Are you saying that I am not allowed to comment on what has happened to myself and other users who share my opinion that we have not the slightest idea why we have lost our RSS? Are you saying that if I express my opinion I will be disenfranchised because you do not like what I have expressed? I have oracticed good behavior and if I am wrong please correct me. I posted this in another area and was told that I was in the wrong forum. Consequently I posted this here. If you don't like the content because you just decided you don't like it does that mean you can disenfranchise me by a stroke of your pen to show your authority ?Why am I getting a caustic reply when I am in a quandry along with others as to why we have lost all of our RSS. Numerous people have posted on Versiontracker to this effect and we have been ignored.

No. Let me explain your actions so you'll understand why what you did is bad:

First you posted here:
http://forums.cocoaforge.com/viewtopic.php?t=10269 - This was not posted in the correct forums. This is general help and not app specific help. Please note that we have a sticky that says PLEASE READ: This is NOT an Adium, Colloquy, or Growl Forum! at the top of these forums, and we'd add Vienna to that line if we could add anymore text to it.

Then you posted here:
http://forums.cocoaforge.com/viewtopic.php?t=10271 - This was done correctly. You posted in a new thread, in the correct forums. I don't know if you searched, but I'm sure you did.

Then you posted here:
http://forums.cocoaforge.com/viewtopic. ... 8202#78202 - You hijacked a thread for your own needs. This is poor form.

When you have a issue with an application, the proper way to post is in their support forums, not on versiontracker or macupdate or any of that mess. And to only do it in one place. Doing this in the way that you did wasn't cool.
