Not sure what is meant by "squid" proxy, but this seems to be the same problem I'm having ("writing error" thread) -- my proxy is also set for port 3128, and I'm getting the same error.

Yeah, I've tried it with the "Use HTTP" option on and off. I've also got the port for messenger.hotmail.com set to 80, as that port is known to be open.

Basically anything I do nets me the "writing error"; if I turn off the proxy support, it just times out, of course.

Just to follow up on my own question a bit... Does Adium use any ports other than the one you specifiy in the Connection pane of the prefs? My wireless connection here is portblocked all to hell, so if Adium is trying to do something outside of port 80, then that would explain why I can't connect. A...
