Re: mkv + 1080p = choke

QuickTime 7 hardware acceleration is quite limited. It probably won't play your high profile h.264 video. Yes, WebM is so flexible that it only allows VP8 and Vorbis. And I don't see Google adding any other formats soon, it's already hard to have browser support for one pair of video/audio. Outside ...

Re: 10.6.2 and AC3 Passthru

HandBrake produces mp4 files, not mov. You can't assign a custom channel layout to an ac3 track inside mp4. So there is nothing to fix in HandBrake, if there was, it would have already been fixed.

Re: No playback of AC3 m4v's in Quicktime X - problem?

Violating what specs? Apple made their own mp4 brands, and the way to store ac-3 inside the iso file format has been described by ETSI and approved by the MP4 Registration Authority: http://www.mp4ra.org/codecs.html

But still, Apple doesn't really care about ac3 outside of the appletv.

Re: No playback of AC3 m4v's in Quicktime X - problem?

Actually, QuickTime X can reproduce ac3 from mp4/m4v if you have a 64bit version of a52codec, or if you start qtx in 32bit mode. But only if you have only one ac3 track and no other audio track.

Re: Mkv don't work + it keeps restarting my control panel

From what I know, QuickTime X use UTI to identify what it can open and what it can't. The problem is that no applications installed by default on Leopard or Snow Leopard declare any UTIs for mkv. In the meantime you can download an application like NicePlayer which does it. And mkv will magically st...

Re: 5.1 to Stereo ... Mac vs AppleTV

And I see that they added the following layout in CoreAudioTypes.h: kAudioChannelLayoutTag_AC3_1_0_1 = (149L<<16) | 2, // C LFE kAudioChannelLayoutTag_AC3_3_0 = (150L<<16) | 3, // L C R kAudioChannelLayoutTag_AC3_3_1 = (151L<<16) | 4, // L C R Cs kAudioChannelLayoutTag_AC3_3_0_1 = (152L<<16) | 4, //...

Re: 5.1 to Stereo ... Mac vs AppleTV

Well, clearly apple didn't take it only as a channel count as it uses the layout written in these specs in their mp4 importer. Each acmod value means a different channel count with a different channel layout as described there. Yeah maybe ETSI and Apple did a stupid thing, saw this little nice table...

http://pda.etsi.org/pda/home.asp?wki_id ... 8EBA7EAy,5 the section about ac-3 inside mp4.

Yeah it was an hack, but the hack was just a standard sample description with a dac3 atom. And inside the dac3 the channel layout as in the new ETSI specification.

Re: 5.1 to Stereo ... Mac vs AppleTV

gbooker, apple includes a channel layout in their mp4, and it's the standard one for ac-3 in mp4 as defined by the ETSI specifications. And HandBrake has always included a channel layout for ac3 too. The only problem I see here (other than appletv audio selection being totally broken in 2.3) is that...

Re: Format information garbled in Quicktime Inspector

That's an HandBrake issue, QuickTime wants a pascal string in the compressorName field, but HandBrake was writing a c string.

That is a QuickTime's bug. If there are two components for the same format (like divx...), nothing is displayed in the info window.
