Hi, I haven't updated to 10.5.5 (Is it out yet? Software update doesn't offer it yet) I will test GrowlSafari again when I update and write back. Also, I didn't check if tabbed browsing was enabled in the Safari prefs, but I'm assuming it was. The new tab would actually open, but a few seconds later...

Took me a couple of days to figure out how to uninstall GrowlSafari, so I figured I should type up some instructions in case others need it.
