Current source has a fix which doesn't cause significant blocking on the main thread.

There's apparently a bug in which the Facebook service plugin goes into a tight loop and downloads continuously. We're still looking for steps to reproduce or more information about what's going on.. a debug log of this happening (trac.adiumx.com/wiki/CurrentAdiumDebug) would be immensely helpful.

I use Mail in 10.5.6 with Growl every day, and I haven't experienced problems. Could you please post the crash log which you get in this situation?

Try selecting "Hide client identity" in the Options tab of your Sametime account's preferences. Does that help or change anything? It looks like your company's server is rejecting the version Adium is reporting.

The 'syslogd' CPU usage is probably because something is being logged to your Console (which turns out to be a fairly expensive process). Metacontact information is pulled from the Address Book live and is also stored within Adium's preferences in the Application Support folder. To disable the AB portion, you'd need to disable 'Consolidate contacts listed on a single card' in Prefs->Advanced->Address Book

You have the contact list minimized? So its icon is in your dock and it is not visible on screen anywhere else?
