I removed AviImporter-r7 (Intel).component, and now things seem to work fine.

ADDENDUM:
I'm wondering if my trouble started when I upgraded from Perian 1.0 to the newest version a week or two ago. I'm running OS 10.4.11. I feel like going back to the Perian 1.0 and seeing if it fixes things.

If I try to open an avi file on my mac, quicktime (and other software quits).
