Exactly the same problem here, same version, using OS X 10.5.5.
Can log in using the Microsoft messenger program on the same mac (and also my Windows XP box)

Just signed up to ask exactly the same thing... Using Leopard and Adium 1.3.2.
Just to clarify... when I'm already talking to someone, the window doesn't pop up. If someone that I'm not already talking to sends me a message, it does.
