Re: Q: Regular Expressions

find a word that is present in each of the feeds languages you do not want, or one that is only present in the language you do want. It must be a word in as many articles as possible to be the most effective. make a smart folder that contains those words and your feed. Smart folders are AND only, so...

Re: Vienna and styles in 10.6.8

I have the same issue although I can't tie it directly to 10.6.8 I don't use safari so it may be related to one of the recent updates for it, but have no evidence of a change there to compare. I just started Vienna one day and had no style.

Re: doing something with atom next, previous, first, last links

Very good point, I'll rephrase then. Until there's a big difference to 'web guys' (big distinction between them and developers) that makes it worthwhile for them to make rss a secondary format, or until atom shows something to the reader/consumer, visibly not behind the scenes that makes them either...

Re: doing something with atom next, previous, first, last links

under utilized, possibly largely overlooked protocol feature. not quite dead, in the sense that atom is still not as popular (nor is it likely to be) as rss. in fact I'd be willing to say that until atom can do something rss can not, most sites will have an atom feed 'also' along with their rss feed...

Re: Suggestion - One-click "Save as PDF..."

well you could ask. Or you could ask as well as providing text/'source' of the script and what it does, proving it does nothing malicious.

Or you could just put it on a flash drive and try to run it. how is it that vienna came to be on the work computer, did IT provide it?

Re: Suggestion - One-click "Save as PDF..."

you could set up an automator or applescript to choose 'save as pdf' from the os x print menu. Not exactly the same thing but once you get used to the idea that 'i wish this program could do x with a file' can be solved with automator (easy, 'clicky' but somewhat limited) or applescript (more like r...

Re: Using Vienna with Dropbox

this might sound silly since I don't use Dropbox, but how are you syncing it? is your dropbox a volume mounted to all the macs or a proprietary interface to sync with it? Can you explain what doesn't work? if you only run one instance of vienna, can it see any articles or subscriptions? if you get o...

Re: Reset RSS Feed/ Control No. of Posts

Is it the exact same feed url? in vienna, select the feed and hit edit. if it's /rss or //atom, verify it's the same thing for the other programs. Often a feed reader will either pick its favorite, or a site may prefer you to subscribe to one of several that it can do. Otherwise, I've seen some feed...

complex rules

So I found out today you can not have multiple <criteriagroup> in a single smart folder. Is there a reason for this? Are there plans to update or improve the existing smart folder tools in newer versions? Creating complex rules should not be that difficult for a program that runs on sql. If I want a...

Re: Reset RSS Feed/ Control No. of Posts

That's controlled by the feed's content side, not by you on the client side. Most RSS feeds default to 20 articles.

Not through Vienna directly but you can use http://fulltextrssfeed.com/ to build a feed that has full articles instead of summary only. Test it out and see if it will work for you.

Re: Refresh and Default Browser

Preferences > open links in external browser. if this is checked, it will open all clickable links in the system's default browser. or if you right click on any item, you have the option to do the same on a case by case basis, keeping the internal browser also enabled. This is my preferred method.

Re: Vienna is excruciatingly slow

How many articles do you have flagged? How many are currently read (make a smart folder Read is Yes) in your db? if the answer is many to either of those questions, you should adjust your use of Vienna. I have learned that although it's pretty efficient at what the developers seem to have envisioned...

Re: Vienna & GeekTool

That method does cut out a lot of extra work. And it does make more sense to do it with a shell script rather than applescript. Since Unread Articles is a smart folder, it's in that section in the database. If you can get your script to point to that folder id (i've messed around with so much I have...

Re: Vienna & GeekTool

If all you want is the total unread count, the Preferences item 'show in menu bar' will do that. As far as your applescript, it's neat but I don't know how far you will get with it. I've been poking around in Vienna looking for variables and things that the Preferences don't give you, and I haven't ...

before Geektool can be used, you need to get a way to output to command line the information you're trying to display. Are you able to do that much? If so, how?

Re: Delay on RSS?

I should have mentioned the most necessary (for me) addon for using Thunderbird with RSS feeds is Thunderbrowse . There is an addon for using it with Growl also, but if I remember right, I disabled because it includes some body text if the message is short for new emails. Something like that, play a...

Re: Delay on RSS?

The best method I would recommend for troubleshooting is, use another RSS reader for comparison. Nearly every modern browser has a 'live bookmarks' section that you could view, nearly every modern email client has a subscriptions section. Personally I would use an email client, as you can already mo...

Re: Vienna tabs?

Closest you would have is flagged/saved articles. they don't act that way, but you can flag any article from any feed and from my observation, there's no exiration date.

Except the downloads, Vienna does everything in the one window.

Re: Vienna tabs?

To add to the above suggestion, the only time you would be opening a new tab is by clicking on the title of an article, or something else that would be clickable in an article as a web link. If you don't do this, you'll have no tabs. I remember NNW working the same way except theirs are vertical alo...
