Click the Group Name, and press Cmd-I, or choose Get Info from the menu.

Change the alias, under the Settings tab to whatever value you want it to be...

I rolled my own version after (very) briefly looking at the source.

Basically, I added another version, that uses '/who', and does what I think you want, although the format is somewhat different.
