It turns out that I had to delete and remake all my feeds to be able to get them to work.

They are all working properly now so thanks for the help.

OK, going to answer my own question here, though I don't think this is the full answer. I just added a new feed to Newsfire and Growl notified me of the new items in the feed. It seems that any feeds already in Newsfire don't want to talk to Growl, only new feeds added will kick off the notification...
