Actually Growl is its own separate application, Adium just packages it for convenience. Growl stuff is in the standard directory for application stuff (~/Library/Application Support/Growl in this case). There are some preferences in the standard location for preference files (~/Library/Preferences)...

Oh, then you should probably take a look at what I use. Enable the Growl status item in general preferences, then when you need to do something where Growl would get in the way, click the menu item and then click "hide notifications" That'll hide them until you click to not hide them any ...
