Yes, I've tried it by checking two options:
- Display custom emoticons
- Show Display names as a status messages
Then restart Adium again, but still...it doesnt work

I'm not sure what service I'm using, but i got Jabber (PSI).
I'm using ADIUM and what I'm trying to do is to show their Dispaly Names only instead of their e-mail.
Now it shown like this:

abcde@hotmail.com
john
