Another work around (the one I use) is to set the "Advanced->Hide Adium while in background" preference. This works for either tabbed or non-tabbed users although only when Adium is in the background. If it's the active app then windows sprout like mushrooms unless tabbing is on of course.

One thing I always LOVED about ICQ back before it was horribly bloated was the ability to NOT have a new chat window pop up when a new message arrived. I have not found a way to do this with Adium.
