There's no technical solution besides disabling any firewalls you have on and then attempting to send. AOL made the protocol & servers and has had more time to shake it out for 1, and for 2 its absolutely not simple to navigate around or through routers and firewalls.

IM Encryption in Adium has been discussed. At first blush this seems to be a 3rd party product that works with the GAIM program. Note that we don't use GAIM code itself but libgaim, the core functionality [for communicating with services], and this doesn't mention any form of compatibility with that.

A really cheap trick would be to flip the alias code in the LV and have it read alias only and set aliases for those names and have it appear as Bob, Sally, whatever without anything else. It wouldn't be terribly hard, but it would be extremely limited in utility

Based on whether or not the font supports it? We don't do synthetic font effects such as Bold or Italic, only if the font supports it IIRC.

It's no small task to do so, especially nicely and especially with multiple emoticon packs. That said I have a plan drawn up but I can 100% guarantee it won't happen any time soon.

I've noticed it also depends on message style - some use an animating image, some don't.

In the constructive vein - Safari has the option of an always visible tab bar (and when tab(s) appear it does too) that is similar to the way Adium looks, with the addition of brushed metal and the lack of certain coolness [dragging, status icons, etc.]. Do you find Safari garish as well or only Adi...

No surprise there on the QE acceleration - labels are drawn using Quartz 2D Extreme (that's how ya smack a gradient pill around! )

The MSN icons - a complete, animated MSN 6 set is on the Xtras site.

Service-specific emoticons - not necessarily easy, Adam said he might look into it when he gets some free time, don't get your hopes up and there's no ETA
