I upgraded to the latest beta yesterday, we'll see how it goes when I get to the office and open up the macbook.

It has no problem connecting manually when I ask it, but I shouldn't have to ask it.

How about a simple HTTP server interface, so you could do growl notifications by fetching something like "http://localhost:1111/info?icon=...&tit ... .%0d...%0d..."? Implementing an HTTP server that listens to localhost and supports GET is pretty trivial.
