I really think this a worthwile alternative that a lot of people would use. Functionality exactly like iChat and Mail would be bliss.

Large number of messages ... then the badge becomes unreadable unless you have 3 icons in the Dock. Then what? It becomes just what it can be right now, a simple Dock icon state that warns of new unread messages. Why not just display one badge covering the *total* number of new messages received. A...
