I see no reason why this should dismissed straight out as with smaller contact lists it could be very cool! Maybe it would be better to keep it as avatars only though with details presented in a tooltip?

I'm not sure I agree with this fundamentally just from a security standpoint, especially when using a Windows machine. I'm not sure how or if it could be used in a hostile manner, outside of spamming, but I still don't like it as a concept.
