What about making the service icon the status icon instead? This would be more logical to first time users IMO and the badging would likely be something they miss or complain about ("I couldn't see their status" or "There's always something covering my buddy's icon" are scenario...

IMO the main "default" style should include 'the whole thing'. Some users probably don't even try others.. just stick whit the main one. I'm not totally convinced. If we create an all singing, all dancing style intended to show off the options available, we could run the risk of flooding ...

Indeed. It's not an easy thing to do, making an app this advanced; it's even more of a challenge when you consider that the devs do it for free ie. in their own time.
