Volume up/down Screen brightness on my MBP dont affect my framerates, not sure whats causing it, but when you drop frames in arena its usually good game, the frame issue is definitely related to the fading of the message as opposed to the appearance of the message.

This is the exact reason I and several friends of mine no longer use growl on our macs, this fade effect makes World of Warcraft stutter and drop frames when running GLFaster 2 option both on my Macbook Pro and my Mac Pro with 8800 GT.
