By latest version do you mean 1.2.7 or 1.3b7? If the former, try the latter, if the latter, then try re-adding your MSN account.

Try removing everything in ~/Library/Caches/Adium/Default then relaunching Adium... you could also try removing and re-adding the MSN account. The display pics did come back within a few hours for me as well.

I would suggest two things:
1. Posting the crashlog (don't forget to use the Code button above to ensure it formats properly if you paste it in here)
2. Finding steps to reproduce the crash
