aMSN removed that feature at least 8 months ago, that may be someone with an old version. Now the window only open if someone start typing.

We can read in the changelog of Vlc 0.85 that the new version support Growl.

Do you have any idea how to make it works?

What we did for aMSN is that if the window is closed before the 60 seconds, then we show a notification. If it's at 60s (+/- 2-3s) then we just don't show it.
