After even more playing around I've narrowed it down to not being able to install it on a user account if filevault is turned on. Is this a problem that the developers are aware of?

after more playing round I can install it on my air but only as a different user?! can anyone provide an explanation? I've also tried repairing permissions...

Updated to Growl 1.1.4 on Leopard (10.5.3), install went cleanly. Tried to install GrowlMail and on the second screen (Destination Location) 'Continue' is always grayed out. No matter where I click to try and select the option, the button stays grayed out. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling Growl....
