Have you tried the official icq client? Does it give you the same problems?

How about if you're writing a letter, playing a game, watching a move... would you still like a window on top of everything, disabling all other user input? (See my examples above of what can happen.)

I completely disagree. If I'm typing, and that window comes to the front, and I am mid sentence, that's bad. Well, this kinda happens already and it's a bit annoying. If Adium is your active application, and you receive a file, different things can happen: You automatically accepted file transfers....

True. But if there already is a plist on the system we still have a problem, right?

I'm at a loss. Please explain how creating a (symbolic) link would help in this case.

I agree with both of you that Adium was not meant to be used this way. But the 'portable applications' business is growing quickly, and I really think there is need for a work-around for this 'feature' in OS X.

Other apps must have the same problem. Have they solved it?

Just to check, you know that there is a related preference setting in 'Preferences / File transfer / Status / Show the file transfer window automatically'. If you leave it unchecked and the window is still visible, I'm not sure it is brought to the front when a transfer begins? (Or if it should be.)

Perhaps you could change the application bundle's 'CFBundleIdentifier' from 'com.adiumX.adiumX' into something more unique (like 'com.adiumX.adiumXPortable'). Then it would be fairly safe to delete the preferences file afterwards. I'm not sure if this can be easily done from a script, but you always...

dumbkid, I found out that scripts (like %_music) are not resolved when put in your personal message.

In the menus use View / Sort contacts by status.

I still don't understand... But it's no big deal, I was just curious.

A note for those using localized versions of Adium (like me). You need to use the English version (just disable your own language) in order for the new preferences dialog to show up.

I appeciate the concept of open source. But a "feature" requiring modifications to both Adium and LibGaim, could it be done as merely a plugin?

Personally I agree that it's annoying. But for your contacts to get the "MEMark is using an old version of Messenger bla bla" is also annoying. I implemented the "MSN Shared Search" feature to (Lib)Gaim a few months ago. (It didn't make it into the code, but that's another story....
