Having the same problem - had an old version of Adium and could not connect to AIM or MSN. Just updated to 1.3.2 - still couldn't connect to either - changed port of AIM to 443 and that now works - however MSN still getting this same error:read error. Will it be as easy as a port fix for MSN too? OK...
