I'm not a programmer, but I know the status of my system before and after the problem.
The only variable was Perian. Perhaps there is something else in my system that conflicts with Perian. Just thought I'd pass along my experience. Best of luck!

Perian 1.1.2 killed sound on PowerBook G4 1.67
Perian 1.1.2 killed the sound on my PowerBook G4 1.67 running Mac OS 10.5.5.
Reboot didn't help.
I checked, but it was not related to the MIDI setting issue that is often the cause.
Uninstalled Perian, rebooted and sound was restored.
