This is a set of preferences which definitely needs to be added; I'd say it's our #1 reasonable and fairly easy feature request right now.

I'd be happy to review a patch which implemented this in a smooth fashion.

Please try the current debug build of Adium (http://adiumx.com/faq/CurrentAdiumDebug) and post the debug log of a Direct IM being initiated and 'gibberish' subsequently being seen by the other side when you send messages.

What do you see in the Events tab when you get info (Contact menu->Get Info) on the contact?

The problem is fixed for Adium 1.2.4; a beta can be found by enabling beta update checking in your Adium General preferences.

Perhaps File->New Chat is what you want? It lets you just type a name, regardless of whether that person is on your list.

Adium 1.2.4 will have libpurple 2.4.0. I've posted a build at Adium_1.2.4svn20080301; please verify that your problem is fixed there.

Does she have OTR set to manual only?

And you didn't drag the space to be larger at any point? Adium will keep the size you set if you increase it manually.

As noted in the documentation ( http://adiumx.com/faq/ManagingContacts ), if you're not using the standard window style, hold command while dragging to move contacts.

Please see the request for debug info in that ticket.

Should be fixed for real for Adium 1.2.3.

Or just drag the contact to the group in which you want it, in your contact list...
