alright, well, i have a video file sample that exhibits the same crash symptoms as the large one. the sample is about (bs=1024 count=3000) in size.

QuickTime crashes when opening AVI file
QuickTime [player v7.6(472), qt v7.6.0(1290)] is crashing when trying to open a specific AVI file. the AVI file is from a collection of other files that open fine. the AVI file that crashes QT also opens fine under VLC and MPlayer OSX. I am using perian v1.1.3 on leopard 10.5.6. the crash dialog tha...
