i too had the problem. it allways crashed when i retrieved new mail. i tried to delete the growl mail plugin in system prefs, but it just kept on coming back. then i opened up mail and went the mail/prefs/>>/growl mail. then i unchecked the enable growl mail check box and mail is now working again!
