OK, I exported the .mov file to an .avi file, and the subs in the .srt file are displayed properly. Thank you, Perian.
But, I don't understand the problem. Aren't .mov files the quintessential QuickTime media? And, wouldn't Perian be able to get to them?

Yeah, I totally destroyed any traces of Perian, first manually, (then using AppCleaner in a second attempt), then re-installed Perian 1.1.3 from the disk image file. No subtitles. Grollo- I tried your suggestion, and it doesn't work for me. In fact, even if I leave the subtitle box unchecked in the Perian pane, when I close it and reopen it, it comes back checked. That happens whether or not the QT player is running. VLC shows the subs nicely, but I really need to use the QT ...
