Maybe the server was all tied up? It could be that it's just not allowed to talk to Adium...

What about the first issue? Is there any way to suppress those? This has been moved to Preferences > Advanced > Message Alerts > "Only count..." as of Adium 1.4b9, in case anyone else has trouble finding it.
