yeah, facebook chat has been iffy for quite some time for me. I started a similar thread also. My guess is that it is out of the developers hands and solely facebook doing weird non standard things

Hi, I had set up adium to login to facebook via jabber. This worked fairly well but I found that messages were occasionally not going through properly(e.g. ppl would send me a message and I would not receive it). I figured it had to do with the fact I wasn't using the official facebook login provide...
