I was just experiencing said problem today. Perhaps search Trac for "away message display" or something....if all else fails, file a ticket. That's basically the only way things get fixed.

Such a thing is rather dependent on Gaim....should it be inside libgaim, it would be fairly simple to implement.....otherwise, I find it unlikely that the devs will include said feature.

To interject, I've had this problem too....and no, said arrow has ever appeared. This hasn't happened in a while, but it still sometimes happens.
