Thanks. This is something that I've been thinking of for a long time ("What exactly is it that makes me prefer iChat to Adium?") but never quite got up the energy to ask about, so I'm very grateful for the quick reply. :) (Don't mistake the above thought for me thinking it's a priority or ...

Menu without opening

One thing I really like about iChat is that the menu is always available, even when iChat isn't opened. I know the details of this, and I know Apple cheats a little by using private functionality on the menu extra. Nevertheless, I would love to have an Adium helper application that provided a menu l...

Clicking the Download link on the right leads to a page that allows you to download 1.1 or 0.76, but not 1.1.1.

One of the advantages you listed for the new interface was "Apple-like," so I thought "Apple has realized it's a bad idea" was a good argument.

Growl in user folder?

I guess there's probably very good technical restrictions, but since I am going to do it anyway, I thought I'd better ask: Why does Growl not allow installation to the user folder on Tiger? 0.76 not only allowed this, but did it by default. With 1.1, I've got to complete the install and manually mov...

So maybe the word you are looking for isn't hard, but something else. <shrug> Well, popup menus themselves are not a bad thing. They're excellent for choosing options. But I think using them to switch modes is a bad thing. That's what tabs and lists are for. I guess in October, we'll know if Apple ...

Well, I don't know what to say. I don't mean to be harsh, but the only explanation I can think of for that is that you're too in love with your design. But it's easy to settle the question of whether it's too hard: Test it and see. :)

This is the problem, I don't see how this is anywhere close to hard. Well, a mock up would take a while, but this I can answer immediately. :) Let's assume my complaint is Adium sending me notifications I don't want. I start at the Growl preference pane. From here, I click the Applications tab and ...

There's some good here: A simple, attractive default Applications tab. A lot of complexity is hidden (but still discoverable). I think you've settled on the right way to pick the application (double clicking from a large table, or clicking the application and then Configure). However, there's some b...

System alerts

Mac OS X can be set to speak alerts. Is there any way to get them as events in Growl instead? Also, is there a way to adjust the volume from the Speech notifier?

I like hearing the text of alerts, but hearing them as loud as the system likes to speak them is just plain creepy.

I have to admit, I'm a bit skeptical of this choice. It seems inevitable that the Java bridge will go from not developed to not supported to not working. And that's discounting the other apparent weaknesses of Java.

Still, if it doesn't work out I imagine it won't stay for long. :)
