If I understand correctly, you want to use Jabber Transports. You need to set those up at your Jabber server, this is not done within Adium.

This is not the first time I have heard of this problem but we haven't been able to get to the core of it. Please try creating a new OS X user account, load Adium and see if the same thing happens. If it does, then see Current Adium Debug for how to get a debug build of Adium to run in the new user ...

1. Yes, right-click -> expand combined contact, then just drag out contacts.
