Re: thank you - matroska mkv has now H.264 sound too.

I am wondering if by your experience ATV's cpu is powerful enough to present a 720 Matroska container with H.264 sound seamlessly. Quite frankly, no *. Output resolution has very little to nothing to do with it. The ATV doesn't have enough processing power. * Most 720p MKV files use high profile H....

Likely the audio is AC3, and you didn't install the A52Codec (or Nito screwed up the install if you used it).

Use this instead:

You are confusing the MPEG2 codec with the MPEG2 file format. Perian only does the codec; you need Apple's (buggy) component for the file format

Under the Development tab, the website quite clearly has a link to the subversion repository, including "checkout source" in the description.

Perian does not deal with MP4 files. This must be done within Quicktime itself

Re: Yes, MPEG-2 file

Yes, the format is an MPEG-2 file, but with AC3 5.1 muxed audio. I have the QT component for MPEG-2, but I thought Perian made up for the lack of support for the muxed audio. Perhaps this is my new-to-Mac misunderstanding? This is only the case when QT is actually told that there is any AC3 audio. ...

Are you saying the container format is a MPEG-2 file? If that is the case, then the fault lies with Apple's MPEG component, not Perian. Furthermore, there really isn't anything the Perian can do about this situation.

If it isn't an MPEG-2 file, then what is the container format?

IIRC, only the decoder has issues (likely a bug in their code, wouldn't be the first time). I believe the encoder can be safely use with Perian

I said quit any apps which use quicktime. I was trying to tell you a method without rebooting, but since you are in a ranting mood then your solution is:

Reboot.

There really is no need to remove Perian before updating. Just double click on the pref pane in the update, and it'll install the new pref pane after removing the old. Then the installation process will move old copies of perian to the trash before installing new ones. This was all done with the ide...

Read the notes at the top of the post. If you do all that, and it still doesn't work, then it will not work with your decoder.

It's just slow. Long story short, hundreds of MB are being wasted because of openvz's horrible dealing with threads, which means that the server has to be limited so that it only serves a smaller number of requests in order to keep the memory usage in check. We are looking at alternatives to fix thi...

The DTS is in the perian component, but the AC3 is in a different component. Separate code bases. This is not the big issue, mostly it is lack of time. It'll get in there eventually.

Assuming it really is a .mpg file (you didn't confirm), scream (bugreporter.apple.com) at Apple and demand they fix it. Aside from that, nothing can really be done.

If this is a .mpg file, go blame Apple; it's their fault entirely and Perian has absolutely nothing to do with it.
