2 dashes to em-dash, how to disable?

I have Adium 1.4.1 running on Mac OS X 10.6.5. When I type two dashes in the Adium message window, they are immediately replaced with an em dash. I've been using Adium 1.6.2c and can confirm that it stopped working last Thursday, August 18. I tried several different servers and ports, but it won't connect now. It tries indefinitely with a message like "Connecting to toc.oscar.aol.com 9898"
