The two main third-party IM clients for Windows are Gaim (http://gaim.sf.net) and Trillian (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/). Gaim is GPL (free, open-source, etc., like Adium), while Trillian is closed-source and has both a freeware version and a better "pro" version that you can buy.

Yeah, so I see this as more a matter of practicality than of privacy. So I don't see why the feature shouldn't remain in Adium.
