Get Info on that meta-contact and drag the contacts on the left drawer up and down. The top one will be the avatar used.

I changed sheet to drawer ;)

The person doesn't add the http:// prefix, so it goes somewhere else

Just copy the address, and edit it in the address bar in Safari or whatever you use
