Re: Just downloaded Perian 1.2 - it dosnt install?
I found out that this was caused by an older version of Google video chat. The new one works, and will delete the old version's files but won't fix root owning ~/Library/QuickTime/. We can probably clean it up in the installer.

What does it do instead of opening it? If it opens with no video, what does the cmd-I window look like?

Re: Just downloaded Perian 1.2 - it dosnt install?
Terminal method: 'sudo chown -R `whoami` ~/Library/QuickTime' and then type your password. But it's probably faster to delete ~/Library/QuickTime; the installer will recreate it and the files in it now aren't needed for anything. By the way, I tried to reproduce this problem (by installing Google Vo...

Re: perian with ffmpeg-mt?
No, it won't work. QT7 is too limited to support ffmpeg-mt without some hacks, and those hacks aren't implemented either (right now, it'll just crash if you enable it). Even if Perian could work with it, I can't think of a way to do it without delaying the video by ~3 frames (= .1 second) which woul...

Re: MKV files won't open in Quicktime
It sounds like a system bug in LaunchServices. Unfortunately I can't think of any way we could work around that, but please write a bug report on http://bugreport.apple.com or http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html.

Re: Audio-only issues with BBC content via get_iplayer
Does it work with 10.5 without Perian?
Either way, I'd need to see a file.
Also, there is no such thing as a "bottom crop tag", so I can't tell what the actual problem is from that description.

Re: Just downloaded Perian 1.2 - it dosnt install?
Yup, same thing here... tried updating, erasing, installing, changing permissions ( ~/Library/Quicktime doesn't exist on my system, only have /Library/QuickTime/) You tried installing as a user without a ~/Library/Quicktime and it didn't work? Can you write to ~/Library (i.e. can you create the fol...

Re: MPEG-2V codec?
So they're .mpg files renamed to .avi. QT can't handle that, so you'd have to rename them back.File Format -> MPEG-2 Program
…but it gives me a dialog saying "This file is not a movie file" when I rename something to avi.

Re: Help, Matroska Export component not registering
Perian doesn't have any export components. Though it might be nice, I'm not sure QT is flexible enough to do a good job.

Re: Perian is dead! since 4/4/10 on my Mac
They probably need to be renamed to .mp4. Or renamed from .mp4 to .flv, I didn't check. QuickTime requires accurate file extensions for some reason.

Re: Just downloaded Perian 1.2 - it dosnt install?
At least the new error message gets us halfway to a solution. Can you post the output of the Terminal command I gave above?
I'm guessing deleting '~/Library/QuickTime' or fixing its permissions will fix your problem, and that some other installer has broken it.

Could you upload the file to Mediafire? See Submitting Sample Media if it's too large.

Re: Perian, MKV, MPEG2 = yuck
Hmm, something's definitely wrong with handling of these files. I tried importing a DVD (Martian Successor Nadesico vol1) and the video doesn't import due to some problem with sample times. Haven't looked at it much yet. My only impression when looking at mkvinfo is that their video tracks should us...

See the "dd" command in http://ffmpeg.org/bugreports.html and run that in Terminal.

Replace ~/Library/QuickTime/Perian.component with http://astrange.ithinksw.net/perian/Per ... ponent.zip and it'll be fixed. There will be a beta fixing this as well quite soon.

Re: Determine if Perian is installed programmatically
Method 1: Check if {~,}/Library/QuickTime/Perian.component exist. This is what the installer pref pane does. Method 2: Using Carbon, iterate through the component list and look for a component type like 'eat '/'VFW '/'Peri' or 'imdc'/'avc1'/'Peri'. This works if it was renamed (no reason to do that ...
