Issues Sending/Receiving IMs to both AIM and MSN contacts

So I got really upset at a friend of mine (MSN contact on a Windows machine), because I thought they were ignoring my IMs for a week for no reason, when it appears that they actually weren't getting most of my IMs. I signed on to MSN using the actual MSN messenger (4.0.1) and IMed them today and found this all out. I've had that happen before with this same friend, though in the middle of a conversation, not when I've tried to start a conversation.

As for problems with AIM IMs, I've had situations where (with one contact in particular who uses Windows) I type a message in the message line and hit enter or click 'send' and the message disappears from the message line, but doesn't show up in the window. It's like the conversation window freezes up, and I can't send or receive messages. Or, sometimes, I send 3 or 4 messages and maybe only 1 of them actually goes through. Or, my friend will send me 3 or 4 messages and maybe only one of them gets through to me.

I never had either of these problems when using MSN messenger or AIM, so I think they might be bugs with Adium. Any suggestions on possible operator errors that might be causing this if they're not bugs would be appreciated.
