Adium Freezes Entire Computer?

Post by Prometheus22 »

I have Adium 0.62 on my PowerBook G4 and it runs fine. My friend, however, was running 0.62 on her iBook G4 and had some problems. When she clicked the dock icon, it bounced and then did nothing. I tried it, and was able to replicate the problem. I tried trashing her plist files and it didn't work. Then I just downloaded 0.77 and it seemed to work fine. However, she just now called me and told me that Adium disconnected (the status circles went blue) and as she tried to go in an Adium window to reconnect, the mouse and computer completely froze.

She forced the restart but i told her to use iChat in the meantime before I can figure out what happened. Unfortunately, there were no crash reports or anything. Is there anything I can do?

P.S. At the same time, I couldn't empty the trash with the original Adium (0.62) because there were some files that Finder said couldn't be deleted. Does that mean anything?

Thanks for any help

Of course it does. It probably means bits and pieces of Adium were still open even if the application itself crashed.

It also means that it conflicted with 0.77

OK, so should I delete and reinstall 0.77? Or is there simply no way of knowing what to do (because of the little information available)?

No need to reinstall it, just make sure you're using the latest version

I noticed the discussion went away from the freezing issue...I thought I'd chime in and say that I have experienced a similar problem.

Twice now, within the last week, my computer has completely frozen while using Adium on the AIM protocol...It has only happened since I upgraded to .77. I'm also running shapeshifter, and usually have safari and iTunes open and hidden, if that is of any significance.

My computer:
iBook G4
640 MB RAM
1 GHz

Thanks!

Nothing Adium (a user-space application) can do should be able to freeze your computer.

Safari and iTunes in combination may be your problem... I find if I've had both open for a couple of days my machine starts locking up. Killing 'em and restarting helps stability heaps.
That said, the latest security update (today) has fubar'd my Safari so I'm using Firefox now !
