Hi there, really like Adium, etc.

How should I connect to Napster?

I have a username made up of letters, and an account id made up of numbers, and I do know my password, but no combination is letting me log in, what am I missing.

TIA

Does Napster have instant messaging capability in its current incarnation? I haven't tried it. At any rate, to my knowledge the Napster messaging protocol is not supported at this time. Look for the people who run "Gaim" and ask them to add it. Adium will then inherit the ability to use it from them.

That's for the old napster 1.0 protocol. Not the new pay service

We'll be taking out that Napster service option for the next release... with the advent of the new Naspter pay service, it's just confusing.

Napster…

Why would Napster have an IMing service?

Makes no sense for a P2P service…

Their P2P service doesn't make much sense either :)

See: asterixed fine print at the bottom of the Napster home page.

*It is necessary to maintain a Napster subscription in order to continue access to songs downloaded through the Napster service.
Makes sense…

But a total rip-off!

the original napster, 1.0, had a chat service much like irc. It was separate from the downloads service. It was pretty decent, I used it for a while.

That was reverse engineered by the gnapster people, and the gaim folks. Fun thing. Napster was dead.

Then roxio bought the napster name. I was the biggest proponent of keeping the napster plugin, but agree with Evan that it's just confusing now.
