Newbie howto - MSN multiuser chat?

Post by jcourcoul »

Sorry for this totally newbie question; I just can't figure it out.

How do you set up a multi-user chat in Adium when connected to MSN? Searched all the menus, tried all key combos, but whenever I'm talking to someone, the "invite to chat" option is always grayed out.

Up till now, the only way I can get a multiuser chatroom going is by having someone in MS's client start it up. I really don't want to give up Adium just because of this, but I do need the functionality urgently.

TIA,

It'll be available in the next major version (.80). You can't make new multiuser chats over MSN in .77, sorry.

I have found a way around it.

Basically, i don't know about you people, but i take advantage of adiums multiple account feature. I have multiples of each acount. The lack of multiuser msn chats drove me nuts.

Then i decided to use MacMessenger to log on to one of my many MSN accounts. It offers me the ability to add two of my other msn accounts, or my main msn plus another msn account, into a multi user chat.

Then i close the window, and the MacMessenger account leaves. I can then select other names and add them. By the way, if the first time you click "invite" they are greyed out, do it again, and it should be fine.

You can also log onto MacMessenger to block people. MacMessenger offers all the function of MSN Messenger : Mac. So you can use it in MSN Messengers stead, and if you share my goal to have no microsoft products on your hard drive, this will help in its furtherance.

Adium .80 is out, so now I can finally do MSN multi-user chats.

Well, actually I can't. Am I doing somethign wrong? According to yoru change log, this feature IS in the new version.

Thanks!

Control-click on someone in the contact list, it's one of the options... referred to as a "Multiuser chat".

One thing to note, though, is that such chats are treated differently from one-to-one chats, unlike in MSN:Mac where the two are apparently interchangeable. I guess this is part of Adium's AIM heritage :)
